Zingers!

I had a conversation with a colleague this morning about a name suggestion she came up with for our small team that was going to participate in a lunch time video game activity. She suggested “The Neon Zingers” and of course I am old enough that the word “Zinger” means only one thing:

Ohhhhh yeah, that’s right. Dolly Madison Zingers, in chocolate, vanilla, or coconut-raspberry.

The highlight of the day for me when I got to buy lunch in middle school was the tantalizing possibility of getting a Zinger. I always opted for the “box lunch” instead of the hot lunch, and to the best of my admittedly nebulous recollection, it was a white cardboard box that included a cheese sandwich, a bag of potato chips, and some type of dessert item, which was occasionally a Zinger. Not a fruit or vegetable in sight.

The very best part of a Zinger was how you could peel that rubbery layer of icing right off the top and eat it separately.

My parents did not buy snack cakes at home (a wise decision on their part, in hindsight) so this was a huge treat for me.

Also, this advertisement is permanently embedded in my brain. The Zinger Zapper!
