I made my Grandma Ruby's yakisoba recipe tonight, with a couple of changes that made it even better. I think she’d be proud of me.

When I go home, I will miss sitting on the couch with my mom in the mornings and before bed, sometimes just quietly being with each other, sometimes cracking jokes or talking about life.

Today is my mom’s birthday. 80 trips around the sun. She doesn’t feel like celebrating, and I understand.

The past week has been an emotional roller coaster. Lots of highs, lots of lows. I’m having to learn how to just roll with things that don’t make sense. The rules have all changed.

We are visiting my mom and dad for the holidays. Dad’s Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s have worsened to an alarming degree since August. I’m trying to take as many photos as I can while I still can.

What’s that feeling when you are working hard on self-care, and then something happens to someone you love and your immediate thought is, “that happened because I was being selfish”? Oh, I know: stupidity and magical thinking.

My dad decided more than a year ago to start a vegan diet to help with symptoms of his Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's, but recently he has become what I call “flexitarian.”

While I was in Washington State visiting my mom and dad, I spent a lot of time hunting. For fruit, that is! Cherries and berries and bees, oh my.
