at 1 a.m. GMT last sunday, a gigantic earthquake (magnitude 9.0) struck deep under the Indian Ocean, setting off tsunamis that proceeded to destroy the coasts of Indonedia, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka within 15 minutes to 10 hours after it happened. if you’re geographically challenged, look here.
Villages were obliterated, along with more than 135,000 people, houses, cars, hotels, businesses… everything.
The earthquake was detected, but there just wasn’t enough time to warn anyone before the waves hit, nor was there any sort of adequate warning system in place that could have alerted people and saved lives.
The death toll is horrible, but now officials are concerned that the disease outbreak in the aftermath could double that number.
