so i noticed something this morning, an oddity about the way my eyes work. this particular thing is not anything new; in fact, i’ve noticed it many times before in my life, and i guess that i just thought that it was this way for everyone. (kind of like when i was in 3rd grade and got my first pair of glasses. i didn’t know that i couldn’t see; i thought that blurry was normal.)

anyway, this morning as i was talking to doc, i kept closing one eye and then the other because the effect was really noticeable.
i was doing that because my left eye sees with a slightly reddish cast, and my right eye sees with a slightly bluish cast. i don’t notice it at all when i’m using both eyes, but if i close one and then the other, there is a noticeable difference, especially in skin tones. how strong the effect is depends largely on the kind of lighting i’m in. it caught my attention today as i was curled up on the sofa in my studio with the window behind me, looking at doc. all the lights were off but cloudy noon daylight was coming in through the window to light the room.
doc thought i was winking repeatedly at him with both eyes while we were talking. i explained that i was just fascinated by the color cast difference in my eyes, and he said that he’d never heard of that, and that he saw color the same way out of both eyes. this is the first time that it occurred to me that i might not be normal in that respect. (any comments from the peanut gallery about my lack of normalcy in other respects?)
so, does anyone know anything about this? do you see reddish out of one eye and bluish out of the other? or is this just one more way in which my eyes are really messed up?
by the way, when i got my eyes tested last fall for the first time in, like, forever, they told me that my prescription in both eyes is -8.75. i’ve just now been researching that and trying to figure out how it translates to the 20/20 scale, and i’m not having much luck. anyway, i know that -8.75 is really really BAD. i have to hold objects about 4 inches from the tip of my nose before they become clear.
the comparison image of the berries at right shows approximately how they would look to me without my contact lenses or glasses. pretty amazing, eh?
Haha I sneer at your -8.75. That’s my right eye but my left eye is up to -10.50 which means even when sober, I have beer goggles. š

Yep, every morning when he wakes up he asks, “Kathryn?” and I say, “yeah.” and he says, “ok.”
Both of my eyes are -10.5 for contacts, about -11.5 for glasses. I have to hold things about 2.5 inches from the end of my nose to focus – it’s so close that I have to just use one eye or risk going crosseyed.
After spending WAY too much time googling and thinking about it, I’ve determined that -10 is roughly equivalent to 20/1250. -8.75 is around 20/1050.
BTW, I’ve noticed the red/blue thing before, but usually only when I’m lying on my side. I can’t recall if it’s always the same eye that’s red.
