Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

Saw a really good movie on Sunday. We Tivo’d The Good Girl, which I thought was going to be one of those throwaway chick-flicks, and here is where I should mention that I should not prejudge films based on the star and other things that star has been in (to wit: Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). I figured, hey, a movie with Jennifer Aniston about a small-town girl trying to figure out what she wants in life and love — eh, gonna be totally forgettable. I was wrong.

I have been thinking about it a lot since we watched it. Now every time I think of Jake Gyllenhaal, I get this weird sort of painful empathetic heartbreak type feeling. I’ve seen him in two movies now and in both he’s played these lonely, deep, eccentric, mentally ill characters. The other one, Donnie Darko, is one of my very favorite movies (like, ever). Actually, now that I think about it, he was in October Sky as well, which is also a very good movie.

Doc and Joel went out Friday night and watched The Wrath of Khan at the Inwood. I would have gone but was not feeling very well. Doc participated in an audience contest to see who could do the best impression of Kirk yelling “Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!” I’ve seen his impression (which involves using his cell phone as a tricorder) and I’m sure he would have won, but he didn’t want the prize so forfeited to the other competitor.

Saturday night we saw Ladykillers, the latest film the the Coen brothers, which didn’t turn out to be all that good. I mean, it was OK and all, but it was no O Brother Where Art Thou, or Fargo, or Raising Arizona .
