i didn’t know this would turn into a rant about fast food

Doc and I have decided to eschew the Food Pyramid, and begin eating according to the Snack Rhombus.

Every time I eat something I shouldn’t, I tell myself that it’s the last time. But it never is. Sigh.

Speaking of things one should not eat, I am glad that McDonald’s has chosen to remove the Super Size option from its menu by the end of 2004. Anyone who bitches about how it’s just a moneymaking scam, because now people will have to buy TWO full orders of fries, can just freakin’ bite me, because you DON’T GET IT. It may be extra value for the price, but it’s crappy nutrition. Go have a damn apple or something.

But… ahem… if I were to have, hypothetically, gone to McDonald’s for dinner tonight, hypothetically I would have been SHOCKED to hear the cashier offer me a free apple pie or free ice cream cone if I Super Sized. I think at that point it’s called “Your Big Fat Ass Size.” I also would have, hypothetically, been amazed at the size of my regular order of fries, and wondered exactly how freaking huge the Super Sized version is. Hypothetically, of course.

Places like Burger King are now offering the bunless Whopper (which sounds kind of obscene, taken out of context… hell, it sounds obscene in context too). I’ll be happier when they start offering substitutes for fries: a side salad, fresh fruit, carrot and celery sticks. Yes, I know many places already offer side salads, but have you ever asked if you can substitute that for the fries in your value meal? They look at you like you have sprouted an extra head, and say, “Um… okay, but it’s $1.79 extra.” Again with the missing the point.

Tomorrow’s breakfast: plain lowfat yogurt, no-sugar-added muesli with cinnamon and Splenda. Tomorrow’s lunch: swiss, ham and turkey on Ezekial sprouted grain bread, small spinach salad with tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette, an apple. Tomorrow’s dinner: Broiled chicken with lemon and oregano, sauteéd green beans, Greek spinach salad, garlic and cheese toast (100% stone ground whole wheat).

See? That’s a really yummy meal plan; satisfying to the taste buds and quite adequate portion-size-wise. And it’s low in sugar, so it won’t spike my glucose or insulin levels.
